Botany Walk

The breaching of the flood embankment near Budleigh Salterton in October 2023 marked the completion of the Lower Otter Restoration Project.  With the breach completed, tidal waters returned to the lower Otter valley for the first time in over 200 years. Since then the vegetation has been evolving rapidly with freshwater habitats and plant species declining in extent and salt tolerant plants characteristic of saltmarsh and mudflat beginning to establish.

Join Dr Sam Bridgewater for a walk to discover how the habitats and plant species of the valley have changed since the completion of this project and what further changes the next few years is likely to bring.

Know before you go…

The walk will last approximately 2 hours and will be at a gentle pace following flat gravelled paths. There will be regular stops along the route at viewing areas with benches. Much of the reserve is accessible for mobility scooters, please contact us if you would like to discuss access.

Please note there are no toilet facilities on site. The nearest facilities and concessions are based at Budleigh beach or Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club.
