30th July Beautiful mires

White beak sedgeIn preparation for a botanical walk I am leading tomorrow as part of heathweek I did a quick recce of the mires of Colaton Ralkeigh Common. There were beautiful delicate fields of white beak-sedge sweeping across the Common, with cotton grass and bog asphodel still flowering. Absolutely beautiful, but understated. Definitely an under-appreciated habitat. The stonechats were calling on the way back to the castle.
